Advertising Clicko de Mayo Digital Marketing

General-market’s top media buying and planning agencies are adding yet another event to their already cramped Upfront agenda in May. This time they will have to make room for a Cinco de Mayo digital feast, or rather “Clicko-de-Mayo” celebration, organized by the New York City-based Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) on May 5th, 2011.

The one-day event, which was to be held originally at the IAB offices in New York but grew so quickly to make organizers search for a bigger venue, seeks to lure general-market buyers and planners to the Hispanic digital opportunity, something that became more urgent after last week’s 2010 Census figures were released, showing Hispanics not only as the nation’s largest –and youngest- minority (representing over 50.4 million people in 2010) but also the fastest-growing.

“We are going to debunk many myths, and make sure general market agencies follow the Hispanic audience,” Seneca Mudd, IAB’s Director for Industry Initiatives told Portada. “This is no longer a niche issue; this is a general-market issue,” said Mudd, a former Yahoo executive about the upcoming event, whose agenda has not yet been released to the public. The IAB is the trade association for digital communications, a sector estimated at over $25 billion.

Sponsored by Telemundo, Terra, ImpreMedia and Univision, the appropriately labeled Clicko-de-Mayo event is expected to gather in one place some of the biggest names in media buying and planning, as well as CMO’s of Fortune 100 companies in the categories of consumer packaged goods, automotive, electronics, travel, tourism and retail. These agencies, explains Mudd, traditionally put their multicultural strategy and budgets in a corner, but “this doesn’t make sense any more,” says Mudd, an MBA graduate from the Harvard Business School.

“We know the AHAA agencies very well,” says Mudd, who is fluent in Spanish. “So our goal this time is to reach Madison Avenue and educate them on the U.S. Hispanic market opportunity.” Although the names and agencies attending the event are being kept confidential, Mudd assured Portada they include representatives from the nation’s leading agencies.

Though Hispanic --and digital spend overall-- still don’t match the time spent by consumers in media, Mudd sees some major trends in the digital advertising space: Geo location-based marketing, where marketers offer consumers a special product or service offer based on their location; an increase in short-messaging (text, Twitter, etc. as users move away from traditional email) and the so-called cross-screen interaction, which allows marketers to send messages to consumers across multiple screens with the same time window.

Asked about the main message he hopes to send during Clicko-de-Mayo, Mudd didn’t hesitate to state: “The Hispanic consumer has a greater appetite and a larger wallet than you might think... and it is one market you’ll ignore at your own peril.”

2011 US Census Marketing Hispanics Business

By Roberto Ramos CEO Vox Collective - In my last two HuffPost entries I addressed the stellar showing of Hispanics in the 2010 Census: 50 million strong, accounting for more than half the population growth in the United States over the past decade, and making staggering gains in crucial states like Texas and California as well as traditionally non-Hispanic states like North Carolina, Ohio and Indiana. Leading this growth are Latino children and youth, a segment that is not even yet old enough to vote, but who have a remarkable impact on today's trends, pop culture and economy.

Kids under 18 have accounted for a significant portion of Hispanic growth, and a large chunk of them are 5 and under: In California and Texas alone 90% of new births can claim Latino heritage. I like to call them the "Dora Generation," after the popular Nickelodeon cartoon character Dora the Explorer.

The show was devised over a decade ago and soon took off and became one of the most popular children's icons in history, spawning a multi-million dollar empire of products (books, dolls, clothing, games, CDs, backpacks) marketed equally to Hispanic and non-Hispanic parents and children. The Dora phenomenon continues unabated today with a new generation of kids following perfectly bilingual Dora and her sidekicks Boots, Diego and others in their adventures, being inspired by their curiosity, and taking on her Latino culture as their own.

Dora's original audience is now composed of tweens, and they represent an even more crucial market for brands. Not only are they much more digitally savvy and media saturated than any generation that came before, this group is also much more likely to be multicultural. They were also raised with stories and trends that were more likely to draw from diversity: like Dora, of course. The Dora phenomenon, like this Census itself, signals an important threshold for the growing Latino influence in the mainstream.

What The Dora Generation Can Teach Business

• Kids marketing and multicultural marketing have become one, as most kids come from a multicultural background, especially Latino. Brands should tap into the unique experiences of these kids growing up in two worlds as fodder for product innovation; a new Dora might be next in line.
• Rethink your marketing strategies when speaking to moms. Ask yourself whether your brand is incorporating Latina cultural insights into your product development given that Latinas are the main growth pillar in the mommy segment.
• Dora is a smart girl and she knows there's money to be made by knowing other languages, especially in this tougher inter-connected global economy. This presents some product opportunities in the creation of bilingual educational toys for the kids, as well as language and cultural products for adults.
• Think of ways of incorporating Latin culture into the mainstream to engage both your Latino customers as well as mainstream audiences.
• For the media industry, Dora's success is a wake-up call to create more properties that are culturally rich and diverse, especially to reach U.S. born young Latinos -- many of them original Dora Generation kids -- looking to both connect with their culture and share it with their peers.
• Go green. Generation Dora has been raised to respect the environment and its inhabitants. Brands should expect to continue this engagement by coming up with cool and inspiring ways to tap into respect and curiosity for our planet. The growing Dora tweens will also challenge companies in the next generation of green marketing.
• Dora and her friends like to visit Latin America and the world. While the Census points a strong multicultural picture in the U.S., the global kids market is even stronger and growing faster. Companies should rethink how they approach international markets, and how these markets can also serve as product innovation fodder for what we promote back at home.

But perhaps most important, a focus on los amigos:

While the Census numbers fueled by the Dora Generation present a market that is growing, the Latino community and its children still face strong social obstacles including poverty and lack of access to education. As companies and brands engage Latino families, they must find ways of giving back and promote the full development of Latino kids. They represent the future of the Latino community and our nation. It is only by investing in Latino kids that the true power of Generation Dora will be felt and we can all enthusiastically say "Vámonos."

SATW is an international nonprofit organization comprised of over 20,000 of the most distinguished journalists in the tourism sector from Canada, United States and Mexico. SATW members are held to the highest level of ethical and responsible journalism and the designation of Guadalajara as a venue for this Convention deserves recognition. Mexico was granted this honor by the organization after competing with other countries such as Ecuador, Chile and Canada.

Mexico Tourism Board officials welcomed guests and thanked the guild for their ongoing efforts to promote Mexico. Eduardo Chaillo, Director of the Mexico Tourism Board Strategic Business Unit in the U.S. and Canada, spoke about the difficult times Mexico has experienced this year and reassured that travel to Mexico is back up and running thanks to associations such as the SATW, that have aided in the country’s recovery.

He also pointed out the importance of SATW members having chosen Mexico, specifically Guadalajara, for their 54th annual meeting. “The richness of this city along with its infrastructure makes Guadalajara one of our top destinations for meetings and conventions. Mexico has evolved dramatically in the last ten years as a destination for the meetings market and this is thanks to all the combined efforts,” said Chaillo.

SATW attendees will be able to explore the wonders of Mexico after the conference, with post trips to Manzanillo, Puerto Vallarta, San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato and Zacatecas, just to name a few.

Mexico's Travel & Tourism 2009

Mexico's Travel & Tourism started 2009 on a positive note ... Despite the intensification of the global recession and continued drug-related violence in Mexico, international tourist arrivals continued to expand (+5.9%) in the first four months of 2009. However, the gains were concentrated in January and February, while April saw just a 0.2% year-on-year rise and the growth is estimated to have come mainly from lower-spending visitors staying near the US border.

Moreover, according to new research conducted by Oxford Economics on behalf of WTTC, the peso's sharp decline meant that US dollar spending in the January-April 2009 period was 7.6% below the level of the previous year.

... the remainder of the year will be tough
"Given recent negative developments, it's hardly surprising that the situation is forecast to be tough for the remainder of this year," said Jean-Claude Baumgarten, WTTC's President & CEO on releasing the results of the research. "Indeed, we expect Mexico's Travel & Tourism Economy GDP to contract by 9% this year - more than the 6.5% decline forecast for Mexican GDP as a whole," he added.

"Even allowing for the positive start to this year, arrivals are now expected to decline by a third in 2009, with a similar decline in spending, thereby reducing direct employment by 160,000 jobs to fewer than 1.6 million," Baumgarten noted.

Smaller, but nonetheless significant, drops are expected in residents' tourism spending and in investment in tourism facilities, according to the WTTC/Oxford Economics research.

"However, the government is responding really pro-actively to such developments," Baumgarten said, "planning to invest US$90 million in the industry over the coming months, with an extensive marketing campaign being launched in key source markets. In addition, a number of other measures have been introduced to stimulate demand, such as complementary insurance for hotel bookings by foreigners."

As a result of all these efforts, WTTC/Oxford Economics believe that a sharp rebound in activity is likely over the next two years, with Travel & Tourism Economy GDP projected to expand by over 6% in 2010 and 2011.

"More importantly, we are also optimistic for the longer term," Baumgarten said. "We still expect the growth in Mexican Travel & Tourism Economy GDP over the next ten years to average close to 5% per annum, which would mean that direct employment in Mexico's Travel & Tourism should be in the region of 2 million by 2019."

The Cinco de Mayo Business Opportunity

Spanish Internet Marketing - The holiday of Cinco De Mayo, The Fifth Of May, commemorates the victory of the Mexicans over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. It is primarily a regional holiday celebrated in the Mexican state capital city of Puebla and throughout the state of Puebla, but is also celebrated in other parts of the country and in U.S.cities with a significant Mexican population. It is not, as many people think, Mexico's Independence Day, which is actually September 16.

Setting The Stage

The battle at Puebla in 1862 happened at a violent and chaotic time in Mexico's history. Mexico had finally gained independence from Spain in 1821, and a number of internal political takeovers and wars, including the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) and the Mexican Civil War of 1858, had mostly wiped out the national economy.

During this period Mexico had accumulated heavy debts to several nations, including Spain, England and France, who were demanding payment. Similar debt to the U.S. was previously cleared after the Mexican-American War. France was eager to add to its empire at that time, and used the debt issue to move forward with goals of establishing its own leadership in Mexico. Realizing France's intent, Spain and England withdrew their support. When Mexico finally stopped making any loan payments, France took action on it's own to install Napoleon's relative, Archduke Maximilian of Austria, as ruler of Mexico.

Mexico Confronts The Invasion

France invaded at the gulf coast of Mexico along the state of Veracruz and began to march toward Mexico City. Although American President Abraham Lincoln was sympathetic to Mexico's cause, and for which he is honored in Mexico, the U.S. was involved in its own Civil War at the time and was unable to provide any direct assistance.

Marching on toward Mexico City, the French army encountered strong resistance at the Mexican forts of Loreto and Guadalupe. Lead by Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin, a small, poorly armed militia estimated at 4,500 men were able to stop and defeat a well outfitted French army of 6,500 soldiers, which stopped the invasion of the country. The victory was a glorious moment for Mexican patriots and is the cause for the historical date's celebration.

Unfortunately, the victory was short lived. Upon hearing the bad news, Napoleon had found an excuse to send more troops overseas to try and invade Mexico again, even against the wishes of the French populace. 30,000 more troops and a full year later, the French were eventually able to depose the Mexican army, take over Mexico City and install Maximilian as the ruler of Mexico.

Maximilian's rule of Mexico was also short lived, from 1864 to 1867. With the American Civil War now over, the U.S. began to provide more political and military assistance to Mexico to expel the French, after which Maximilian was executed by the Mexicans - his bullet riddled vest is on display in the museum at Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City. So despite the eventual French invasion of Mexico City, Cinco de Mayo honors the bravery and victory of General Zaragoza's small, outnumbered militia at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.

Today's Celebration

For the most part, the holiday of Cinco de Mayo is more of a regional holiday in Mexico, celebrated most vigorously in the state of Puebla. Though there is recognition of the holiday throughout the country with different levels of enthusiasm, it's nothing like that found in Puebla.

Celebrating Cinco de Mayo has become increasingly popular along the U.S.-Mexico border and in parts of the U.S. that have a high population of people with a Mexican heritage. In these areas the holiday is a celebration of Mexican culture, of food, music, beverage and customs unique to Mexico.

Commercial interests in the United States and Mexico have also been successful in promoting the holiday, with products and services focused on Mexican food, beverage and festive items. Increasingly more cities in the U.S. and Mexico catering to a festive consumer are also more than happy to provide a venue to celebrate, so that Cinco de Mayo is becoming adopted into the holiday calendar of more and more people every year.

Within driving distance of the city, travelers can find several natural reserves such as the Riviera Maya eco-archaeological sites of Xcaret and Xel-ha, which offer breathtaking cenotes (sinkholes), clear-water lagoons, river rapids and forest walks.

Cuisine is another major component of Cancún’s unique offering. The wide varieties of exotic dishes of Mayan origin are distinguished by their use of condiments found in the region. Travel Cozumel Mexico

Cozumel Mexico is the largest inhabited island in Mexico, known as the plunging paradise for divers from all over the world. The island is located east of the Yucatan Peninsula on top of the age-old structures of the Mayan coral reef – the second largest in the world. The island’s lagoon is connected to the sea by narrow canals with underwater caves, bursting with multicolored tropical fish and unique inland reefs. The beaches in Cozumel are surrounded by dense tropical vegetation and unusual endemic species, and while these are also characteristic of the island, its greatest wealth is undoubtedly underwater.

Water sports dominate the scene in Cozumel. About 80,000 of the island's annual visitors come to Cozumel for one thing: the area's incomparable scuba diving. With more than 20 miles of reefs, water visibility to 200 feet, and more than 200 species of tropic fish, it's easy to see why it was a favorite spot for French oceanographer Jacques Cousteau. The area's exceptional diving over-shadows Cozumel's excellent fishing. billfish, including marlin and sailfish, are caught within a quarter-mile off shore.

The Island of Cozumel measures 30 miles from north to south and 10 miles from east to west. It is bordered on both sides by stunning white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters. Travelers looking for ultimate relaxation in a more private setting can head to the quaint beaches of La Pasión, located just north of the island of Cozumel, where the only sounds heard are the crash of soothing waves and exotic birds chirping. San Miguel de Cozumel, the capital of the island, is also worth visiting for some quiet time in a colorful setting. The peaceful old village has all the charm of the Mexican Caribbean with top-quality cuisine that is legendary throughout the region.

Cozumel has a rich, prehispanic past, reflected in its nearly 25 archaeological zones. While the majority is still in exploration stages, San Gervasio and San Cedral are worth a visit. Shopping for souvenirs is another frequented activity in Cozumel, particularly in places like Bazar del Angel, Casablanca and La Campana, all located along the Avenida Melgar. The handicrafts market is located a few blocks from the main square, while other more expensive shops exhibiting art work, like Los Cinco Soles, Playa del Angel and Talavera, are spread throughout the island.

Cozumel is an ideal Caribbean destination for all types of travelers. Those looking for some quiet time can lay on one of the island’s private beaches, and travelers interested in spa treatments and ultimate pampering can visit one of Cozumel´s five-star accommodations, while those wanting to explore underwater miracles can dive into the second largest coral reef in the world.

Mazatlan is one of Mexico’s oldest tourist resorts and home to one of the world’s three major carnivals, comparable only to those in New Orleans and Rio de Janeiro. The city also hosts a number of major international sporting events, including marathons and triathlons.

Mazatlan’s beaches are perfect for water sports. A variety of facilities offer jet skiing, windsurfing, parachuting, sailing, sport fishing and almost any other kind of beach activity imaginable. The best beaches in Mazatlan are those located between Zona Dorada and the three islands which can be visited. Travelers can head to La Posta Trailer Park located on Rafael Buelna Avenue for a quiet night near the ocean.

The Plazuela Machado (Machado Square) is the heart of Mazatlan. On the north side of the plaza is a strip of delightful restaurants, many serving up the seafood the city is famous for. One of the most famous is Pedro & Lola's, named after two famous musicians from Mazatlan, Pedro Infante Cruz and Lola Beltran. On the south side of the plaza is the newly-restored Angela Peralta Theater, a beautiful, neoclassic-style building erected in the 19th century and named after the beloved 19th-century opera diva who died after her only performance in Mazatlan, struck down by yellow fever. Today, the impressive building hosts Sinaloa State´s cultural festivals.

Mazatlan also offers several places for shopping, including Galeria Nidart, which carries both modern art and handicrafts; the Mazatlan Arts and Handicrafts Center; and Sea Shell City, a place that specializes in the exhibition and sale of seashells and other materials from the sea.

Travel Acapulco Mexico

The vibrant Mexican Pacific port city of Acapulco is home to one of the most spectacular bays in the world, making it a favorite stop over the decades for celebrities of the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, Placido Domingo and Julio Iglesias. But Aca, as the locals call it, offers much more than just stretches of beach: Mexicans and foreigners agree that it is the perfect place for people of all tastes and budgets to swim, shop, dine, party or just soak up the sun.

A drive along the Costera Miguel Aleman Avenue offers a spectacular view of the bay and its grandest attractions. These include San Diego Fort, originally built to protect Acapulco from pirates; Cici, a water theme park for children; Papagayo Park, which offers a roller rink, Aviary, a racetrack for kids and model of a Spanish Galleon; and the Cultural Center (Casa de la Cultura), with an art gallery, handicraft exhibit and small archaeological museum.

Although Acapulco attracts throngs of tourists year-round, many of its beaches remain relatively secluded. These include Pie de la Cuesta and the Coyuca lagoon, whose hidden coves and tiny islands teeming with wildlife can be toured by small motorboat (lancha). Another beautiful, less-crowded beach is the pristine Puerto Marques, sheltered within a small bay east of Playa Icacos; it boasts the most tranquil waters in the area, breathtaking sunsets and charming little restaurants.

After basking in the sun, a good place to visit is the bustling central square (zocalo), whose crafts market (mercado de artesanias) and town market (mercado municipal) open daily, offering everything from fresh vegetables and fruits to love potions.

And no trip to Acapulco is complete without seeing the world-famous divers at La Quebrada. Trained divers plunge 130 feet into a narrow cove of just 11 feet of water, which is safe only when a wave has come in. You can see the dives while sipping a drink at the Plaza Las Glorias Hotel or enjoying a prix-fix dinner at El Mirador Hotel. Dives are scheduled at 12:30 p.m., and nightly at 7:30, 8:30, 9:30 and 10:30 p.m. At night, the last divers (at the 10:30 p.m. show) carry torches.

When dinnertime approaches, the rich and famous both within and outside Mexico head to Madeiras Restaurant, an Acapulco institution. Another popular restaurant is Tabachin, located in the exclusive The Fairmont Pierre Marques Hotel, which offers exquisite French-Asian cuisine in a contemporary setting.

When night falls, revelers head to Baby O, Palladium and Enigma (electronic music and house); Yucca, Salon Q and Ninas (salsa and tropical music); and Zucca (60s, 70s, 80s and 90s music). And for those preferring a sunset cruise along the bay to a disco, Bonanza’s offers afternoon and evening cruises leaving from the downtown area near the zocalo; many hotels and shops sell the tickets. The cruises leave at 4:00 p.m., returning at 8:00 p.m.; and at 10:00 p.m., returning at 1:00 a.m.

Although Acapulco is known for its nightlife, it is also increasingly being recognized for its world-class golf and spa offerings. The Tianguis Golf & Spa trade show took place October 19 to 22 2003 at the prestigious Fairmont Acapulco Princess Hotel to promote Mexico as the world's greatest golf and spa destination. The Acapulco Convention Center, one of Mexico’s most important venues for meetings and conventions, is home to Mexico’s famous annual tourism trade show, the Tourism Tianguis.

Last but not least, Acapulco offers a tremendous array of lodging options, from inns (posadas) to luxury hotels. The exclusive Las Brisas resort offers 263 guest houses with private or semi-private pools as well as breathtaking views of Acapulco Bay and/or the Pacific Ocean. The historic Villa Vera, meanwhile, is an oasis of exotically-designed white houses, suites and villas decorated in contemporary Mexican-Mediterranean style.

A two-hour drive northeast of Acapulco leads visitors to the beautiful colonial mining town of Taxco, which offers the best selection of silver at excellent prices.

Travel Manzanillo Mexico

Manzanillo Mexico is a charming city full of festive streets, friendly people, beautiful landscapes and outstanding tourist facilities. The city’s unique history combined with its modern-day offering makes Manzanillo a one-of-a-kind destination for a variety of recreational activities.

The city’s exciting history, full of old tales, pirate legends and treasure hunts, is an integral part of its enchantment. Several historical figures once used Manzanillo as an unofficial port on the Pacific, including Hernan Cortez, the Nao de China and pirates from Portugal, England, France and Spain. In 1908, following the inauguration of the railroad connection between Manzanillo, Guadalajara and Porfirio Díaz, the city finally became an official port of entry. Today, recent modernizations have made it one of the most important ports and trading centers on Mexico’s west coast.

Recreationally, sport fishing is Manzanillo’s main attraction, particularly for sailfish enthusiasts. Since 1954, Manzanillo has hosted the International Dorsey Tournament, a highly-respected competition among the sport fishing community, held every February and November.

Beach lounging is another popular activity. Manzanillo´s peaceful bays and sophisticated infrastructure have made it one of the Mexico’s main tourist destinations on the west coast. Beaches such as Ventanas, Las Coloradas, El Viejo, San Pedrito, Playa Azul, Las Hadas and La Escondida are some of the most serene destinations on the Pacific coast to commune with nature.

Travelers interested in adventure tourism can enjoy a variety of options in Manzanillo. From kayaking in bay waters and driving through tropical forests, to discovering the hidden secrets of prehistoric caves, the city offers it all. A guided safari into the heart of the Tlacota Tropical Rainsforest is another great option, allowing travelers to get up close and personal with the area’s natural beauty. Snorkeling is also available at Rancho El Naranjo, one of the most beautiful natural reserves in the state of Colima.

The city’s most popular restaurants located downtown and in the port zone, offer tasty fish and seafood dishes such as camarones a la diabla, shrimp cocktail, crayfish cooked in garlic or chiles and grilled river crab. For local shopping, the coastal village of Santiago, between Manzanillo and Miramar, offers handicrafts made from shells found in the area.

The mountainous area between Monterrey and Saltillo consists of parallel mountain crests separated by long deep valleys and steep ravines. This spectacular scenery is another popular place for hiking, mountain biking and camping in the woods.

Monterrey’s industrial nature, together with the fact that it is a border state, has made it a wonderful shopping and business center. Its modern malls and luxurious hotels equipped with conference halls serve as one of the largest business and convention centers in Latin America.

Cooking is also an important part of the local culture, based primarily on meat dishes. Classic examples include delicious roast or braised kid (goat), charcoal-grilled ribs, shredded dried beef mixed with scrambled egg and traditional sauces such as pico de gallo, la bandera and la fresadilla.
