Canadian Passports to Enter and Leave Mexico

Sun worshippers headed to Mexico would be wise to ensure they have an up-to-date passport. A Canadian government website is advising travellers new regulations set to take effect March 1 will require them to have a passport when entering or leaving Mexico. There has been no official confirmation from the Government of Mexico, but travel agents are encouraging clients to get on board.

Chris Mayne, of Mayne Travel Services, says the new requirement is a sign of the times." With ever-increasing concerns of security, it is getting to a point, as a Canadian citizen travelling abroad, you really should have a passport," he said.

To date, travellers headed to Mexico have been required to carry a birth certificate or proof of citizenship and one piece of government-issued photo identification such as a driver's license or health card.

Judie Pigeau, travel centre manager with CAA Travel in North Bay, said often a passport offers clients an added level of safety.

The agency (CAA) has had experiences in the past where travellers were not allowed into Mexico without a passport even though the flight had not stopped in the U.S.," she says.

We have been recommending people get passports all along."

The Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada website states as of March 1, Canadian citizens, including those with dual nationality, will be required to present a valid passport in order to enter Mexico. Canadians without a valid passport will be returned to Canada.

The consul of the Mexican Embassy in Ottawa says his government has yet to issue an official warning.
