Dive Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula

Do a little snorkeling in Mexico, and you'll soon be wracked with envy whenever you have to share a boat with a pack of scuba divers. I came down with this affliction several years ago on Baja's East Cape and got so far as to complete the course work, but I was grounded by a hurricane that brushed the coast before I ever hoisted a tank. Since then, my travels have taken me most often to the Yucatán Peninsula, where the warm Caribbean's aqua, teal and indigo striations and hallucinatory clarity have piqued memory of that lost opportunity into a gentle obsession.

Riviera Maya Playacar Playa del Carmen

The de facto hub of the Riviera Maya and Mexico's fastest-growing city, Playa del Carmen is not exactly a place for seclusion and quiet, but it's also not a high-rise jungle. Often known simply as "Playa," the beach is surprisingly broad and relatively clean -- especially north of main drag Constituyentes -- and resort and dining prices are the region's most competitive. Years ago, city officials had the prescience to designate Fifth Avenue -- one block from the beach -- as a pedestrian-only street, with restaurants and shops that percolate cheerfully each evening.

Pauline Frommer in Cancun and Puerto Morelos

World renowned travel expert, Pauline Frommer visited the beautiful beaches of Cancun and Puerto Morelos recently, as she promoted her book Pauline Frommer’s Cancun & the Yucatan: Spend Less See More.

While in Cancun, Frommer had the opportunity to take on a diverse range of activities that the destination has to offer such as swimming with the world’s largest fishes, whale sharks, which are in season during the months of May though September. She also took cooking lessons at the Ritz Carlton’s Culinary Institute, dove into some of the most amazing cenotes (sinkholes) and explored the underground rivers at Xcaret Park. Frommer also participated in Delphinus Trek in Xel-Ha, the only place in the world where you can actually interact underwater with dolphins using your own unique breathing device, which allows you to breathe freely. Besides spending time in Cancun, Frommer visited the pier within the charming fishing town of Puerto Morelos where she was able to sample typical Mexican cuisine.

Cancun Adventure Travel and Outdoor Excursions

Cancun Travel and Outdoor Excursions - Adventure means different things to different people. For some it might be sailing or snorkeling in the crystal indigo waters off the coast of Cancun, Mexico; others might get a thrill from petting a shark or climbing 4,000 feet in the cockpit of a Soviet jet trainer. It certainly means a lot of fun for a lot of people. Statistics provided by the Travel Industry Association (TIA) show that during the past five years, 98 million adults have taken an adventure trip--rock climbing, mountain hiking, whitewater rafting, spelunking, parasailing, skydiving and other activities. “Soft adventure” vacations are milder and may feature walking, bicycling, fishing, camping or horseback riding.
