2005 Cesar Chavez Day of Services
Glendale, Calif. – On and around March 31, 2005, countless Americans across the country will celebrate the holiday honoring the life, work, and values of Cesar Chavez by serving in their communities, making the holiday a day on, not a day off.
Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning, a holiday in seven states (AZ, CA, CO, MI, NM, TX, UT) and dozens of cities and counties throughout the nation, provides students, teachers, businesses, labor unions, and community members with the unique opportunity to learn about Cesar and advance his values and principles by participating in volunteer, educational and cultural activities in their communities.
The active involvement of people from all walks of life in Chavez Day reflects the significance of Cesar's legacy and his special place in American history. Nearly twelve years after his passing, Cesar's philosophy of service to others continues to thrive. He once said, "We can choose to use our lives for others to bring about a better world for our children...in giving of yourself you will discover a whole new life full of meaning."
Make Your School an “Educating the Heart School” on and around Chavez Day. The Educating the Heart School program works with K-12 schools and community-based organizations across the country to combat academic and civic disengagement among youth. Through training workshops and professional development, we provide educators, community members, youth, and parents with the skills, tools, and resources necessary to develop school and community-based service-learning programs that exemplify Cesar’s values and principles.
The primary goals of the program are:
To increase academic achievement
To engage students in positive, effective service projects in their community
To enhance students’ self-confidence and sense of purpose
The Educating the Heart School Program is a way to transform Cesar’s life and teachings into tangible service projects in the community that address local social problems. Past service-learning projects developed through the program include: voter registration and education drives, school improvement campaigns, food and clothing drives for the homeless, school-site conflict resolution and peer mediation programs, education on good health practices and nutrition, and conservation efforts, including native plant restoration, water testing, and waste management – to name a few.
Your participation in the Foundation’s Educating the Heart School Program will help to develop a new generation of young leaders that have the skills and motivation to become life long learners and active citizens. Talk to your teacher, principal, or school board member about getting involved. Together, Sí Se Puede!
