Re-Enter U.S. Citizen Passport Cards
U.S. Passport Card Requirements - Beginning this summer, a U.S. citizen must present either a passport book or a passport card to re-enter the country from all foreign destinations.
To facilitate travel for citizens returning to the United States at land border crossings or sea ports of entry, the U.S. government began issuing passport cards on July 12, 2008. This card is designed for citizens who have traveled by car or ship and wish to come back into the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean or Bermuda.
The wallet-sized card, unlike the passport book, does not allow for international air travel.
Either application requires a person to bring two professional 2-inch-by-2-inch head-and-shoulder color photos on white or off-white background, or to pay $15 at the post office for the service.
A certified copy of a birth certificate and a current driver's license also must be presented.
The cards are less expensive to obtain than a passport book, costing $45 for an adult - including a $25 processing fee paid to the postmaster - as compared to a $100 total charge for a passport book.
The card seems like a cost-effective choice, in particular, for travelers who are crossing the border by car. There are some disadvantages, however, to carrying the passport card if traveling by sea. Learn About Vacation Rentals
