Ensenada Mexico Travel
Sixty-seven miles south of Tijuana, Ensenada is Baja California Norte's most important resort. More than half a million visitors a year visit Ensenada, which in Spanish means "cove."
One story has it that the Spanish priests who discovered the area's bay were so impressed by its size that they felt the name of a single saint was insufficient and called the harbor
Bahia de Todos los Santos, or Bay of All Saints. It's one of Mexico's principal ports of call.
Activities here include fishing for yellowtail, hunting for quail, sampling the offerings at the
Santo Tomas winery, viewing prehistoric rock paintings, and visiting La Bufadora ("The Blowhole"), where wave action through a passage in the cliffs produces a spectacular geyser towering more than one hundred feet. Punta Banda, about 19 miles south and near La Bufadora, is a delightful, secluded beach frequented by sea lions. Fishermen have their choice of taking a party boat or chartering a vessel. Yellowtail season is May through October.
Charming and picturesque, Ensenada has a flavor all its own. There are a number of excellent hotels, all fairly small; they tend to be most crowded on summer weekends.
Best Western El Cid, San Nicolas, La Pinta, Travelodge and Bahia are all very comfortable. The Estero Beach hotel, five miles south of town, offers sailing, tennis and water skiing.
