Scuba diving and Snorkeling Yucatan Peninsula

Scuba divers and snorkelers flock to Quintana Roo for its transparent turquoise-and-emerald waters strewn with rose, black, and red coral reefs and sunken pirate ships. Schools of black, gray, and gold angelfish, luminous green-and-purple parrot fish, earth-color manta rays, and scores of other jewel-tone tropical species seem oblivious to the curious humans and their underwater cameras. The visibility in these waters reaches 100 ft, so you can actually see the marine life and topography without even getting wet. There is particularly good diving in Akumal and Puerto Morelos. If you want to get away from all nondiving distractions, except fishing, head for Banco Chinchorro (two hours northeast of Xcalak by boat).
