Cancun Underwater MuseumsCancun World's Largest Underwater Museum

Cancun has unveiled its most recent venture, the World's Largest Underwater Museum. The National Park West Coast of Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancun and Punta Nizuc, will feature more than 400 concrete sculpture figurines by British underwater sculptor Jason de Caires Taylor.

Several theme-based installations will be featured, with each piece being life-sized, such as an army of indigenous Mayan people entitled "The Silent Evolution" and other sculptures such as the "Dream Collector" who catalogues messages in bottles set adrift from various corners of the world. Additional artists will be asked to participate once the 400 pieces have been placed. So far the first three sculptures have already been sunk.

The museum is a great alternative for divers seeking a new experience for their next underwater adventure and is surrounded by hundreds of species of colorful fish and coral found in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. This new museum is also part of the challenge to conserve the natural coral reefs by diverting tourists away from them, yet still attracting them to the region with this new man-made habitat.
