Loreto Mexico History - For history lovers, Loreto provides a rich and vibrant past.
The region dates back nearly 12,000 years and is considered to be the oldest human settlement in Baja California. Visitors can witness a piece of history by exploring wall paintings of petroglyphs in the region’s large cave system.
An intriguing display of early man’s communication style, these powerful murals represent larger-than-life animal and human figures in artistic scenes that depict ancient ritual ceremonies, historic pilgrimages and heroic battles. Loreto is also home to the 300-year old Mission of Our Lady of Loreto.
The first of the California missions, Our Lady of Loreto was built by Jesuit priest and explorer Juan Maria de Salvatierra, who founded Loreto and introduced Christianity to the Californias.
Accommodations in Loreto are available in a variety of full-service hotels, charming inns and privately owned one- and two-bedroom condominium residences. Conveniently located just ninety minutes from Los Angeles, the Loreto International Airport is only three miles from town.
