Backpack Economy Tulum Tours Guide

Backpack Economy Tulum Tours Guides - Tulum lies 80 miles away from the Cancun strip. For the economical backpacker or cost conscious traveler who prefers not to use an organized tours it's difficult to get to visit the Tulum ruins in the Riviera Maya area.

If you're hiring a car then once you're on highway #307, it's just a straight drive. You'll pass Puerto Morelos, Playa Del Carmen, Xcaret and Xel Ha before reaching the Tulum ruins. There are plenty of signs on the road.

If you prefer to travel by bus then the bus station in downtown Cancun provides frequent daily buses to Tulum and the bus ride takes approximately 2 hours. The bus stops at several points on the way, and has a 10 minute or so layover in Playa Del Carmen, before recommencing the journey. Buses are clean, air conditioned. (there are also small "White Van" services providers which transport up and down #307).

When you're at Playa Del Carmen make sure you ask the driver to stop at Tulum, he'll probably call out anyway but no harm in reminding him to stop. A good tip is to sit near the front of the bus so that you can hear the driver call the names of the various places and you'll be ready for the Tulum stop

He wont drop you right by the entrance gate, he'll stop on the main highway so there will be a short walk involved. Alternatively, you could catch a taxi from the Tulum main street.
Tulum Mayan Ruins

The bus fare is around $6 and entrance price to the ruins are $5 (extra charge for video camera).

Since Tulum is on the same bus route as Xcaret, Xel Ha and Playa del Carmen, I would recommend that you combine your Tulum trip with one of the several other attractions nearby.
