An Eco Treasure North Of Town
About an hour north of town is EcoGuias La Mancha. It’s one of the states small eco providers, and it’s charming. You can see them at www.ecoturismolamancha.com. Heading this locally-owned, locally-operated group is ...
David Díaz Romero, and leading the ever present extra security (in this already super safe place) is Guadalupe Barradas Ramirez.
EcoGuias sits close to the ocean and near the shore of a very large lagoon (part of the coastal wetlands system). On land they have three eco tours--sand dunes, ocean shore, and lagoon’s edge. The tours can be done on foot, on mountain bike, or on burro (my favorite).
Most spectacular of the eco offerings is the motor launch tour of the lagoon and its mangrove growth. Experienced ocean-going fishermen carry you on the lagoon’s calm waters and discuss environmental conditions, talk about the abundant bird life, and help you look for alligators.
The group provides spacious, clean cabins for multi-day visitors, and, of course, there’s a semi-outdoor kitchen for meals.
While staying there a week or so ago, our students spotted a young ‘gator (about 30 inches long, but it still counts) stretched out on a mangrove root.
The eco encounter with EcoGuias is spectacular. And, as always in the State of Veracruz, it’s also cultural tourism. The locals are so friendly. They invite you to share in their worlds and come to know their way of life. We’re going back. One visit just isn’t enough.
