Cultural Participation Is Automatic.
From all over tourists flock to Veracruz. What’s surprising is that the “all over” they come from is Mexico. Veracruz is a tourist destination for Mexicans. And that’s terrific...
for you.
There are popular spots in Mexico with snazzy resorts that do everything for you, and they are very popular with foreigners. By doing everything, there is one thing the resorts don’t do. They don’t take you into the daily life of Mexico and let you participate in the worlds of its wonderful people.
A waiter (working hard to assure a good tip) can be fun to talk to, and can truly be Mexico. But the woman in the corner grocery store talking to you about her husband and how together thirty years ago they built the business and today how important the store is to the customers, especially to older ones who come by to visit, that’s culture.
Or when the young woman who owns the little hardware down the block talks about her father telling his children that the university wasn’t important but making money was, and hearing her talk about her own children and the Mexico of their futures, and that they’ll go to the university, that’s culture.
And sitting around a little 3-table restaurant and talking with locals about the city and why it’s so safe and friendly, or out in the countryside sitting around after a rafting trip with the family that owns the tiny business and talking about how their small town was “back then,” back 20 or 30 years ago.
And talking with everyone about their hopes for the future, for a better life for their kids and grandkids, that’s culture. And you’re part of it.
You’re not just visiting the country, you’re participating in daily, regular life. Our students participate in it—every day on their out-and-about labs and every fieldtrip day and in school talking with the staff. In Veracruz Cultural Tourism, truly participating in the culture, is simply automatic. And because of this, Veracruz is one of the world’s most special places.
