Sam’s, Costco, and Home Depot.

Home Depot showed up here in Veracruz about 8 months ago, and things happened. At my favorite construction materials yard, the sales counter get cleaned and painted. Stock inside the long showcase got dusted, and arranged more attractively. And the focus on customer service took a quantum leap for the better.

The staff got new and much more colorful uniforms, and everyone spiffed up their appearances.

So the big names are there when one need’s them. I had to run to Home Depot this morning to buy a few hard-to-find-locally items for our Spanish immersion school.

But yesterday I was in my favorite construction materials yard talking with friends at the “mostrador” the sales counter, and enjoying their old-fashioned way of displaying their inventory.

I paid at the cashier window and handed my copy of the paid ticket to the pick-up counter. He sent it up in the basket on a chain to the second floor to have it filled. When it all came down, he counted out everything so I’d see it was all there.

Mexico’s expanding. But no matter; it’s still the same old wonderful Mexico.
