The Businesses Love It; The Police Prepare For It.
And we have so much fun seeing it. Veracruz is a tourist town. It’s also a commercial center with Mexico’s second largest port serving as the principal economic engine.
But tourism was the engine...
over the two weeks of Easter Vacation--three million visitors came to town. They came mostly by bus and car. Many came in the back of trucks, and some (but only a small percentage) came by plane.
It was so hard to find a hotel room that a corporate account of the school called and asked us to locate housing for a couple of their employees. Restaurants were full. Movies were overflowing. And the beach—I’ve never seen so many people on the beach.
Veracruz is widely known as a terrific destination for adventure and eco tourism. Not so well known is that it's also a terrific destination for cultural tourism because even as a tourist town, it is still pure Mexico.
And more culture over the two weeks--here in this very Catholic country, alongside all the excitement and party atmosphere were the procession and other activities of solemn, devout belief.
