Xalapa Or Jalapa, It’s Mexico’s Santa Fe

Few places in America capture the heart and imagination as does Santa Fe, New Mexico. Many say that Xalapa is Mexico’s Santa Fe. I think...

they’re right. Xalapa is a wonderful blend of art, energy, nature, and old Mexican culture.

El Centro, with its narrow streets and colonial buildings is vibrantly alive and charmingly unchanged from years long by-gone. Boutique restaurants and artsy shops are generously sprinkled helter-skelter. The especially large city square sits in front of city hall one on side and drops of a hundred feet or so on the other. At the bottom of the vertical face is a delightful museum currently with an exposition of Frieda’s works.

Sitting on the slope of Mexico’s eastern mountain range, the hills and valleys of Xalapa and the housing sitting at all levels up and down the steep streets offer spectacular visuals. With Orizaba Peak as a backdrop, heavy mountain forestation as its setting and waterways as accents, nature has be particularly generous to the city.

The cathedral is magnificent; the several ecological parks are beautiful; the museum of anthropology challenges the imagination, and for educational fun there’s the science and technology museum.

It’s probably correct to say that Xalapa is a Santa Fe for the whole family. It’s on the short list of most favored field trips for our school’s students.
